Fertility preservation

Preserving fertility means freezing eggs or sperm to keep the chance of having children in the future. It is a planning decision — made by personal choice or in the face of a situation that may affect fertility.

The earlier preservation is done, the better the quality of the frozen material — fertility declines with age. The eggs or sperm are vitrified and can be used years later, without significant loss of quality.

Fertility preservation

When to consider it

  • A wish to postpone motherhood or fatherhood
  • Before cancer treatment, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Endometriosis or surgeries that affect the ovaries
  • Before procedures that reduce fertility

How it works

  1. 01

    Reserve assessment

Tests assess ovarian reserve or sperm quality and define the best strategy.

  2. 02

    Stimulation and collection

For eggs, there is ovarian stimulation and retrieval, as in IVF.

  3. 03

    Freezing

The vitrification of eggs or sperm is carried out by the partner laboratory.

  4. 04

    Storage

The material is stored safely until the moment you decide to use it.

Frequently asked questions about preservation

How long can the material stay frozen?

Vitrification preserves eggs and sperm for many years without significant loss of quality. The material is stored for as long as you decide.

Does freezing eggs guarantee a future pregnancy?

There is no guarantee. Preservation increases the chance of using younger eggs in the future, but the outcome depends on factors assessed at the time of treatment.

The laboratory phase — gamete handling, fertilization, culture and cryopreservation — is carried out by a partner laboratory, contracted separately, in accordance with the rules of the Brazilian Federal Council of Medicine.
